Volunteer Job Advert: Finance officer and accountant

1. Overiew

The Pastoral and Environmental Network in the Horn of Africa (PENHA) is an African led Regional organization committed to the development of pastoral peoples through partnership with the pastoral communities in the Sudan, Eritrea, Ethiopia Uganda and Somaliland. PENHA has its international office in London UK where it is registered as a Charity and non profit making company.

PENHA is currently seeking to employ a highly qualified volunteer accountant with relevant experience in admin and finance management with non governmental organizations both national and international.

Job title: Finance officer and accountant

Duty station: London

Contract type: Pro-bono Volunteer 

Duration: One year but subject to review and renewal

2. Main job purpose

Working closely with the PENHA treasurer and ensuring all PENHA finances are properly managed according to PENHA financial systems and regulations of the statutory bodies in the UK Charity Commission and Company House requirements. You will ensure that the donor grant guidelines as agreed with respective PENHA donors are fully adhered in their totality.

Specific responsibilities:

 Put in place proper financial management systems consistent with those of the

PENHA HQ and other PENHA country offices

 Journalizing, posting and analyzing accounts.

 Prepare cheque and petty cash payments as required.

 Oversee payment of staff and volunteer salaries and office expense payments.

 Maintain bank reconciliation every month.

 Prepare quarterly budget forecast and compare budget versus actual as required.

 Follow up country offices fund whether in compliance with donors’ agreement

 Work out the year-end closing accounts including the financial statements for audit.

 Send audit report to respective donors and other stakeholders

 Perform other related work as required.

 Undertake additional tasks as and when requested by the PENHA Board.

3. Qualifications required

Over 5 years of experience with international and national NGOs. The candidate must hold postgraduate degree on accounting and finance from a recognised university and must be proficient in written and spoken English.
