PENHA sees itself as an educational and research institute with its mission to reduce poverty among the pastoralists in the Horn of Africa through the empowerment of communities and to foster sustainable and dignified livestock-based and non-livestock-based livelihoods.
The research is an essential precursor to much of PENHA's educational, training, policy promotion and practical work. However some is the result of practical work and the lessons learnt from them.
The results of PENHA's research have been published in different forms. Most of the 1990s research is in the form of short summaries while much of the later work has been in the form of papers, some of which are in reports of symposia. PENHA staff and associates have also contributed papers to national or international conferences.
