New Publication: Towards an integrated national fire management system in Ethiopia: a review of experiences, gaps, patterns and MODIS data

The Pastoral Environment Network in the Horn of Africa (PENHA) partnered with CIFOR-ICRAF to conduct a study on wildfire management in Ethiopia. The study assesses wildfire management issues and uses MODIS data to analyze patterns and trends.

Forest fires are a pressing issue and threaten to undermine Ethiopia’s gains in forest development and protection. The main challenges have been gaps in knowledge and capacity, and the lack of a long-term strategy for effective forest fire prediction, reporting, control and management. This study aims to address these gaps and help Ethiopia Forest Development (EFD) to establish an Integrated Fire Management System.

Wildfires and forest fires are an increasing global problem. Ethiopia is no exception, and this threatens biodiversity, livelihoods, and the country’s efforts to meet its climate change commitments under the Paris Agreement. In response, PENHA and CIFOR-ICRAF have partnered to address this. One of the results is this groundbreaking state of knowledge report on the issue. It involved federal, regional and local government agencies, amongst others, alongside an analysis of MODIS satellite data. The way forward for Ethiopia Forest Development is to establish an integrated fire management system, and this was validated at the largest national workshop on wildfire management in more than a decade. This work is supported by the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs through the Working Landscapes programme, coordinated by Tropenbos International.
