PENHA is planning to expand its migration initiative in Kent by supporting young unaccompanied and 18+ asylum seekers and refugees of East African origin in the UK during the Covid-2019 crisis and its aftermath – by improving young people’s isolation and emotional homelessness. The project builds on the previous two interventions funded by the National Lottery carried out by PENHA and its partners in Kent in 2018 and 2019 that provided intensive mentorship and career development for young people, so as to widen their professional opportunities and provide access to labour markets, to which they currently have unequal access. Inspirational discussions and tailored career advice sessions to boost their confidence were delivered – by providing a clear understanding of career paths, life skills, rights and obligations, and other advice to shape their future. In supporting those young asylum seekers and refugees, PENHA has been working with various Kent-based colleges, charities and other stakeholders.
